Doncaster Secondary School Collect For Local Food Bank

A secondary school in Doncaster held a collection for a local food bank as part of the run up to Christmas.

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Adwick, based on Windmill Balk Lane, launched a reverse advent calendar campaign to help raise much needed supplies for Doncaster Food Bank. The academy donated 85 boxes in total.

The thinking behind the reverse advent calendar is that instead of students receiving a chocolate every morning in the lead up to Christmas, they instead donate an item of food to the academy’s collection for the food bank.

Andy Scruby, Principal at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Adwick, said:

“Everyone is acutely aware of just how difficult this year has been, so we wanted to do something in the run up to Christmas that could help those in our community who need it.

“We saw incredible support across the academy for this initiative, with students donating to their form group’s collection and our site team also ran a general food bank collection also.

“We are delighted that we were able to make a significant donation, following our collection for Doncaster Food Bank.â€

One student from the academy who has really got behind the initiative is Gypsy O’Connor.

As part of her donation, Gypsy donated an entire box of presents that she had individually wrapped for the food bank to give out local children.

Gypsy said:

“I just wanted to do something to help those who aren’t as fortunate as me and needed some support this Christmas. I just hope it can help people feel a bit better at this time of year.â€

The Doncaster Food Bank, which is run by the Trussell Trust as part of a nationwide network of food banks, works in the heart of the community and provides three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people that are referred to the food bank in crisis.

Sandra Edwards, from the Doncaster Food Bank, said: “We are very proud of the amazing effort made by the students of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Adwick! The food they have collected and donated to Doncaster Foodbank will go a long way to feeding many families who are struggling this year, and more so at Christmas time - well done to everyone who took part!â€
